Process to Migrate

For existing UOB ATM card holders:

Details of the Notice of Migration to ATM Cards with EMV Chip Technology can be found here

1. What is EMV?

EMV stands for Europay, MasterCard, Visa. It is the global standard for chip-based Debit and Credit Card transactions. It is a joint effort between Europay, MasterCard and Visa to ensure security and global acceptance. The EMV standard helps to maximise security and global interoperability so that Master cards and Visa cards can continue to be accepted around the world.

2. What are the benefits of an EMV chip Card?

You will be able to enjoy improved security with an EMV chip Card. The chip contains information about your account and the card expiration date. It also generates a unique code for every transaction when used with a chip-enabled terminal at the point of sale. Your Card information is stored in the EMV chip for this new Card, making extraction of Card information by fraud syndicates more difficult as compared to the existing magnetic stripe Cards.

3. How does the EMV chip card work at the point of payment?

When an EMV chip Card is offered as a mode of payment for goods and services, it is inserted into a Smart Card reader of the terminal. Upon approval, you will sign on the approval charge slip to complete the purchase transaction.

In details, when used at merchants with chip-enabled card terminals

  • Merchants may ask you to insert your card into the terminal.
  • If you’re asked to insert the card, look for a slot on the bottom-front of the terminal and insert your card face up with the chip first.
  • Leave the card in the terminal and follow the prompts on the screen
  • Remove the card when the terminal indicates that the transaction is complete.

4. Can I use the EMV chip Card for online purchases or at ATMs?

Yes, the EMV chip Card functions in the same way as the current cards, for both online purchase and at ATMs. For ATM transaction, you will need PIN. For online purchase, you will require OTP sent from UOB Vietnam.

5. When will UOB Vietnam proceed the replacement of new chip card?
