8 Winning Artworks of UOB Painting of the Year (Vietnam) 2023

“Thủy Phủ – Water Palace”

UOB Painting of the Year Award, Established Artist Category

Author: Artist Trinh Minh Tien

Thủy phủ (Water Palace) represents an ethereal vision of St. Joseph's Cathedral in Hanoi, with rain on the car windshield recreated by the artist on a car bonnet. The Cathedral was built on the foundation of the destroyed Bao Thien tower of Bao Thien Pagoda. Two layers of covering, space within space, time within time – creating surrealism within realism.

This artwork contemplates and questions the clash of values in the course of history and society with a historical manmade structure in contrast to the impermanence of time and memory.

About the artist

Trinh Minh Tien has persistently pursued hyperrealism for many years. For him, painting is a natural and continuous act, much like the way he paints with an airbrush starting from a single point and gradually spreading until he finishes. The use of airbrush on automobile shells as canvas affirms Trinh Minh Tien's unconventional art practice.

“Họa Chúng Sinh #1- Beings Painting #1”

Gold Award, Established Artist Category

Author: Artist Pham Tran Viet Nam

Họa chúng sinh #1 (Beings Painting #1) depicts the trilogy of works and densely crowded webs of human faces, encroaching and suffocating under the pressure of urban developments. The artwork includes bruised faces in combats, children at wars, medieval beggars, coal miners and the innocents struggling to survive in a world filled with complexities.

About the artist

Pham Tran Viet Nam's compositions convey humanitarian messages from the depths of his compassion, the emotional resonance he feels toward societal situations and sufferings in the immediate world. He is drawn into contemplative thoughts about his time and his paintings are sculptural – he sews, embroiders, patches pieces of canvas together, and punches holes into his canvas before painting them.

“Hiện thực chậm lại - Decelerated Reality”

Silver Award, Established Artist Category

Author: Artist Lai Dieu Ha

Hiện thực chậm lại (Decelerated Reality) is an expression of the artist’s personal history, approach and creative process. This artwork recured her own performance Extended North-Needle  (2019) and created a new identity.

The painting is the result of three levels of creation: using the artist's body as the subject, delving into the subconscious thorough psychological research, and finally translating it into a painting. The enduring anguish of loss due to conflicts and chaos and taking risks to go beyond the safe boundary.

About the artist

For over a decade, the public has identified Lai Dieu Ha as an “extreme performance artist.” After four years in retreat to burrow into the method of psycho-dramatic therapy, she came back with painting as the next stage in examining what the boundaries of performing art truly entails while exploring society and humanity from the lens of performance referencese.

“Thế giới - World”

Bronze Award, Established Artist Category

Author: Artist Duong Ngoc Tuan

Thế giới (World) employs an expressive and surreal visual language within an abstract and ambiguous space, with rich monochromatic brushstrokes. This artwork represents a significant departure in terms of the theme from the peaceful and realistic paintings that have long been associated with the artist's practice.

About the artist

Duong Ngoc Tuan has been practicing art for over 20 years with an ardent passion in painting. Throughout his journey, he has experimented with various materials, including oil, lacquer, acrylic, silk, and more.

“Trên con đường - Fly on my way”

Most Promising Artist of the Year Award, Emerging Artist Category

Author: Ta Duy Tung

Trên con đường (Fly on my way) draws inspiration from the pair of shoes the artist used to wear during his school days and holiday job. Only one shoe is seen to illustrate how he has been overcoming odds and emerging stronger.

The untied lace signifies uncertain steps, yet the shoe taking flight and portraying how scattered elements could be extraordinary. Its background is reduced to a flat, dark space for the subject to take focus and accentuate its surrealism.

About the artist

Ta Duy Tung's artistic inclination revolves around depicting the familiar in a realistic manner, serving as symbols for meaning within his conscious, subconscious, and unconscious minds. In addition to painting, he is also passionate about martial arts and Eastern philosophy. Before starting to paint, he often meditates, much like preparing for a match. While painting, he always strives to achieve the best possible state of each brushstroke and shade – when he fails to reach this level of perfection, he is willing to fully scrap his work in progress.

“Qua tĩnh lặng - Through tranquility”

Gold Award, Emerging Artist Category

Author: Lâm Phối Dung

Qua tĩnh lặng (Through tranquility) is a continuation of the artist exploring different forms of alternative spaces. It serves as a form of escapade, welcoming viewers into familiar spaces that evoke a peaceful time one has had. The painting is a piece of memoir and memories of a person racing against time yet striving to slow oneself.

About the artist

Lam Phoi Dung is a print designer and visual art practitioner. She is in love with exploring and creating alternate narratives of life within nature, matter, and colour that corresponds to her journey of self-exploration. She often uses storytelling and nature as an endless inspiration at the core of her practice – creating alternative spaces to escape for herself and viewers.

“Tính Không - Emptiness”

Silver Award, Emerging Artist Category

Author: Nguyen Anh Vu

Tính Không / Śūnyatā (Emptiness) depicts a young man with red hair, carrying a hint of melancholy, gently glancing at the viewer, or, from the viewer, looking away in another direction. With this gaze, the viewer is no longer a viewer but can start a conversation with the character. The young man's form is distilled into lines and colours, drawing the viewer's attention towards the motion and the gaze of the character, forging a lasting connection. The artist sees himself in this character – initially portrays someone other than himself. “I am composed of what is not me", and this work is a zen koan.

About the artist

Nguyen Anh Vu is a young graphic designer who specialises in simplicity and functionality. Besides design, he is also passionate about languages and the history of Fine Arts, which led him to artmaking. His artworks marry graphic design, oil pastels and paper-cutting.

“Lạc Lối - Lost”

Bronze Award, Emerging Artist Category

Author: Nguyen Huu Tang

Lạc lối (Lost) is a call for the end of animal cruelty practices in luxury fashion. Luxury fashion has thrived and gained importance to many. Despite growing awareness and collective call for ethical practices, luxury brands still persist in ruthless pursuit of profit at the expense of innocent animals.

In this painting, we see images of hunted species, their fur cruelly stripped from their bodies, enduring emotional stress and deprivation, and disruptions to biodiversity – our planet’s natural balance can only be restored or preserved when all forms of life are valued and cherished.

About the artist

Nguyen Huu Tang is an independent artist who graduated from University of Fine Arts Ho Chi Minh City specialising in lacquer painting, commerce and media works for many years. His style evoke influences from comics and cartoons from his childhood. The themes of his creations aim to provoke a certain disquietude in the (young) audience regarding contemporary societal issues.

“Chùa bà Thiên Hậu – Thiên Hậu Pagoda”

Artist: Trinh Minh Tien

Chùa bà Thiên Hậu (Thiên Hậu Pagoda) embodies the intricate architectural style characteristic of the Chinese community and boasts a long history, situated in the heart of Chợ Lớn in Ho Chi Minh City. This structure holds particular significance for the Vietnamese Chinese community and stands out for its assimilation and harmony with the local culture in the nation's developmental journey. It has become an integral part of the city's heritage.

“Hoàng thành Thăng Long - Thăng Long Imperial Citadel”

Artist: Trinh Minh Tien

Hoàng thành Thăng Long (Thăng Long Imperial Citadel) is reflected through the water shadow on car windows and depicted using Airbrush spray paint technique on car hood capos. This heritage site bears significant imprints spanning numerous historical dynasties of the nation. It stands as one of Vietnam's most important architectural landmarks.

Through his artwork, Trinh Minh Tien aims to preserve memories and images through painting, offering viewers a different approach and perspective from a contemporary artist.

“Phù Sinh #1”

Artist: Pham Tran Viet Nam

Through the fluctuations of reality, the artist expresses the struggles of natural laws through a tangled interplay of abstract painting language. Life among humans and all things coexists in an imbalanced reality, where the artist can empathize with the soul of a human being.

Looking at the artist's work, we perceive the chaos of nature and the intertwining and connectivity of life, as the gradual decay is replaced by rebirth. Infinite repetition creates the dynamics of life. Not limited to mere conceptual transmission, the artist's practice itself embodies those elements, with the reconstruction of their own works on a regular canvas, cutting them up, and reassembling them into a different form.

“Cúi Xuống Là Hoa - Bowing Down is a Flower”

Artist: Lai Dieu Ha

The separation of reality is expressed through two transformations with two similar states divided in the artwork. Cúi Xuống Là Hoa (Bowing Down is a Flower) represents the internal changes within the psyche of the female character sitting with her face bowed down, reflecting on her own inner self, or it could be an avoidance of societal reality judgments. The change is not specifically articulated by the image of the female character, but rather in the transition between life and decay through the formation of flowers between two connecting patches. It may symbolize rebirth after decay.

“Phía Dưới Làn Da – Beneath the Skin”

Artist: Lai Dieu Ha

Just like a series of human psychological experiments and a chain of individual impacts in various aspects, Lai Dieu Ha transitions expressive language from direct to indirect impacts, delicately handled with familiar painting materials without losing the experimental spirit.

Phía Dưới Làn Da (Beneath the Skin) is a dialogue with unfamiliar figures regarding the absence of a fatherly presence, and the expression of time's transformation from an unfamiliar angle through the storage by fingernails. Something solid, coexisting, is removed, reborn, removed again, and stored. Memories.

The story evolves from a long-term project on hidden memories, still ongoing.

Bữa Ăn Của Người Máy - The Meal Of The Robot”

Artist: Duong Ngoc Tuan

This is a story unfolding in our society. Modern technology is assisting humans, but it also 'intrudes,' turning us into indifferent machines. Spiritual values are being underestimated, humans are neglecting themselves, indifferent to those around them. Bữa Ăn Của Người Máy (The Meal Of The Robot) raises the big question for viewers: 'Are we progressing or regressing?’.

“Sự Tồn Tại Của Ý Chí - The Existence of Willpower”

Artist: Ta Duy Tung

Sự Tồn Tại Của Ý Chí (The Existence of Willpower) stems from the personal experiences of the author when confronted with simultaneous difficulties in life. The painting serves as a symbol of the hardships and helplessness in finding one's own direction. The face is divided into two parts, one open and one inactive, symbolising loss and a sense of abandonment when everything seems to become meaningless. One open eye represents the remaining tiny willpower, while the candle held in hand symbolizes fragile hope and yearning. The artwork is a voice raised against adversity by confronting willpower and hope.

“Kết nối thời gian - Time Connection”

Artist: Ta Duy Tung

Have you ever had moments in life, or beautiful memories, that you just want to live in forever? But time keeps flowing, and everything becomes the past. The past shapes our present, the present shapes our future. Past, present, future, ultimately they are one unified entity depicted in the artwork Kết nối thời gian (Time Connection).

“Thức tỉnh – Awakening”

Artist: Ta Duy Tung

In life, capability or effort is just a part. Everything, every event, has already been predetermined by destiny. Let's not worry too much about everything, just focus on doing our best today.

“Một chuỗi cảnh quang ánh sáng - A Series of Lightscapes”

Artist: Lam Phoi Dung

Một chuỗi cảnh quang ánh sáng (A series of landscapes) is a part of Lâm Phối Dung's exploration into life in the Kingdom of Light and romantic ideals. Landscapes are created through sensory perceptions and observations over time and space while she is somewhere remote. All the scenery is created with the initial idea of creating a print on fabric, which is then cut and pieced together into a connected story. Paradise, hell, sky and earth, distant and near, in what and in someone.

“Bà tôi - My Grandmother”

Artist: Nguyen Anh Vu

Bà tôi (My Grandmother) is a tribute to the late grandmother of Nguyen Anh Vu, who lived through fierce battles and sorrows, bombings and separations, but always wholeheartedly devoted to her beloved family. The artwork raises the question of whether art can make ordinary scenes glamorous? Or are the everyday scenes inherently wonderful but we often fail to recognize this reality?

“Tính linh bởi thế tục - Spirituality Amidst Convention”

Artist: Nguyen Anh Vu

Classic Chinese:

若以色見我

以音聲求我

是人行邪道

不能見如來

“Du hành – Travels”

Artist: Nguyen Huu Tang

Through imposition, gradual homogenization, and dominance, altering the original nature of nature, Du hành (Travels) reflects the current state of climate change, pollution, diseased flora and fauna, and genetic modification. The artwork poses the big question: Are things heading in the right direction as humans explore, yet intervene and alter nature?.

“Cánh cửa – The Door

Artist: Nguyen Huu Tang

Cánh cửa (The Door) describes the emotional state of the author as an individual in today's society, striving to search for an ideal, belief, and meaning of existence in a society where ‘materialism’ is always the measure. The journey continues as a mirage of reality, where each individual must overcome to find their destination.

The UOB Painting of the Year competition is the flagship art programme of UOB, first held in Singapore in 1982 with the aim of recognising artists in the Southeast Asian region and providing them with the opportunity to showcase their artworks to a wider audience. The competition later expanded to Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, and in 2023, to Vietnam. It is the longest-running art competition in Singapore and one of the most prestigious competitions in the Southeast Asian region. Since its inception, the competition has discovered over 1,000 artistic talents across the region.

In its first year in Vietnam, the competition attracted the participation of numerous young and professional artists from all over the country. The competition honored 8 talented Vietnamese artists in two categories: Emerging Artist and Established Artist. The highest award, the UOB Painting of the Year, went to Artist Trịnh Minh Tiến with his work "Thủy Phủ" (Water Palace), while the most promising artist award was given to Tạ Duy Tùng for his piece "Trên con đường" (Fly On My Way).

"This prestigious competition is a great opportunity for Vietnamese artists to showcase their talents and be recognised in the international art market, bringing greater value to Vietnamese art." - President of the Vietnam Fine Arts Association, Chief Judge Lương Xuân Đoàn shared.

"The UOB Painting of the Year competition has brought value not only from a community perspective but also nurtured potential artistic talents and provided motivation for artists to develop their careers and shine in the region, as well as internationally." - Artist Trịnh Minh Tiến shared.

"The UOB Painting of the Year is a regional-scale competition. I think this is an opportunity for local artists to exchange and learn, as well as a steppingstone to understand more about art in ASEAN countries. The awards from the competition are a huge motivation for young artists like me to continue pursuing their artistic path. It has reignited a strong passion for art in me at the age of 20, something I thought I had forgotten for a long time." - Artist Tạ Duy Tùng shared.

In addition to the UOB Painting of the Year competition, UOB Vietnam also provides opportunities and accompanies Vietnamese artists participating in regional art events. For example, UOB Vietnam sponsored Artist Dương Ngọc Tuấn - the UOB Painting of the Year Vietnam’s Bronze award - to participate in Art Jakarta held in Indonesia in November 2023, and in late March 2024, Artist Trịnh Minh Tiến was sponsored by UOB Vietnam to participate in Art Central held in Hong Kong, where many artistic talents from across Asia gathered.

The UOB Painting of the Year is scheduled to kick off its second year in Vietnam in early May 2024, continuing to provide a platform for Vietnamese artists, especially undiscovered talents, to shine and further develop their careers both domestically and regionally.

UOB’s involvement in art started in the 1970s with its collection of paintings by Singapore artists. Today, the UOB Art Collection has more than 2,600 artworks, made up primarily of paintings from established and emerging Southeast Asian artists.

UOB plays an active role in communities across the region, most notably through its long-term commitment to art. As the leading patron of the arts in Asia, the Bank continues to make art accessible to a wider audience through a diverse range of visual art programmes, partnerships and community outreach across the region.

The Bank’s flagship art programme is the UOB Painting of the Year competition, which was started in 1982 to recognise Southeast Asian artists and to offer them the opportunity to showcase their works to the wider community. The competition was extended to Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and in 2023, to Vietnam. It is now the longest running art competition in Singapore and one of the most prestigious in Southeast Asia.

Over the past 42 years, the competition has cultivated and advanced the careers of many artists in Singapore. Notable among them are Mr Goh Beng Kwan (1982 winner), and the late Mr Anthony Poon (1983 winner) and Mr Chua Ek Kay (1991 winner), who received the Singapore Cultural Medallion, Singapore’s most distinguished art award.

The competition has also recognised talents from across the region through the UOB Southeast Asian POY award. Previous winners include Chomrawi Suksom from Thailand in 2022, Mr Saiful Razman from Malaysia in 2021, Mr Prabu Perdana from Indonesia in 2020, Mr Anagard from Indonesia in 2019, Mr Suvi Wahyudianto from Indonesia in 2018.

Together with the UOB POY winning artists, UOB also runs art workshops for underprivileged and special needs children regularly. At these workshops, the young learn art techniques from art professionals and award-winning artists.

In recognition of the Bank’s long-term commitment to art, UOB was presented with the Singapore National Arts Council’s Distinguished Patron of the Arts Award for the 20th consecutive year in 2023.
